Hi, my name is Jessy and Iā€™m a therapist treating anxiety in NYC.

therapy for anxiety

Anxiety is a complex emotion, encompassing a range of feelings from mild unease to debilitating panic. It can stem from numerous sources, including past traumas and current stressors. Traditional therapy approaches often focus on cognitive and emotional aspects, but what about the physical sensations that accompany anxiety?

Somatic Internal Family Systems (Somatic IFS) is a therapeutic modality that acknowledges the interconnectedness of mind and body. Internal Family Systems therapy proposes that the mind is composed of different "parts," each with its own characteristics and motivations. Similarly, Somatic IFS recognizes that these parts can manifest somatically, meaning they can be felt in the body.

In Somatic IFS therapy, the therapist guides clients in exploring their internal landscape, both emotionally and physically. Through mindfulness and body awareness techniques, individuals learn to identify and connect with the bodily sensations associated with their anxiety. These sensations might manifest as tightness in the chest, a knot in the stomach, or shallow breathing.

Once these sensations are recognized, the therapist helps the client engage with them in a compassionate and curious manner. Rather than viewing anxiety as something to be eradicated, Somatic IFS invites individuals to understand and befriend these anxious parts of themselves. This compassionate approach fosters healing and integration, allowing clients to develop a healthier relationship with their anxiety.

Benefits of Somatic IFS for Anxiety

  1. Holistic Healing: By addressing both the physical and emotional components of anxiety, Somatic IFS offers a more comprehensive approach to healing.

  2. Empowerment: Clients learn to become more attuned to their bodies and emotions, empowering them to navigate their anxiety more effectively in daily life.

  3. Integration: Through the process of befriending anxious parts, individuals can integrate these aspects of themselves, leading to greater inner harmony and self-acceptance.

  4. Long-Term Relief: Rather than simply managing symptoms, Somatic IFS aims to facilitate lasting transformation by addressing the root causes of anxiety.

As with any therapeutic approach, Somatic IFS may not be suitable for everyone. However, if you're intrigued by the idea of exploring the mind-body connection and seeking a more holistic approach to managing your anxiety, I welcome you to get in touch.
