Hi, my name is Jessy and I’m a trauma therapist in NYC.
therapy for trauma
Trauma happens when something happens too fast, too soon, is too much, or for too long for our nervous system to process. Traditional approaches to trauma therapy often focus solely on cognitive and emotional processing, but Somatic Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a holistic and integrative approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of mind and body in the healing process.
Traumatic experiences may result in feelings of helplessness, fear, and disconnection from themselves and others. Trauma can manifest in a variety of ways, including hypervigilance, flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
Somatic IFS therapy combines principles from Internal Family Systems therapy with somatic (body-oriented) techniques to address trauma at its root. Just as in traditional IFS therapy, Somatic IFS recognizes the existence of different parts within the psyche, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and motivations. However, Somatic IFS also acknowledges that trauma is stored not only in the mind but also in the body, and that healing requires addressing both aspects of the self.
Central to trauma treatment utilizing Somatic IFS is development of somatic mindfulness, which involves gently guiding clients to become aware of and attuned to the sensations and movements in their bodies. By cultivating a mindful awareness of bodily sensations, clients can begin to release the tension, fear, and energy that have become trapped in their bodies as a result of trauma. This process allows individuals to access the body's innate wisdom and capacity for self-regulation and healing.
Benefits of Somatic IFS in Trauma Therapy
Body Awareness: Somatic IFS therapy helps individuals develop greater awareness of bodily sensations and movements, enabling them to access the wisdom and intelligence of their bodies in the healing process.
Release of Stored Trauma: By attuning to bodily sensations and movements, individuals can release the tension, fear, and energy that have become trapped in the body as a result of trauma, promoting healing on a deep, somatic level.
Cultivation of Self-Energy: Through the process of Somatic IFS therapy, individuals cultivate self-energy—the core qualities of compassion, curiosity, and calmness—that provide the necessary leadership and guidance to their internal system.
Trauma-Informed Approach: Somatic IFS therapy is grounded in a trauma-informed approach, recognizing the impact of trauma on individuals' lives and honoring their unique experiences and coping strategies.
Long-Term Healing: By addressing trauma at its root and promoting integration and healing of fragmented aspects of the self, Somatic IFS therapy offers the potential for long-term healing and transformation, leading to greater overall well-being and vitality.
As clients integrate and heal the wounded parts of themselves, they can experience a profound sense of resilience, wholeness, and empowerment. By reclaiming their bodies as a source of safety and wisdom, individuals can develop a greater sense of agency and capacity to navigate life's challenges with courage and grace.
